Artist Biography

Trumpeter Markus Rutz brings a bluesy, soulful style to his music, with a tone that has been described as “gorgeous.” A dedicated performer, composer, and educator based in Chicago, Markus has made significant strides in his mid-career, earning both local and national recognition for his work.

In 2019, Markus released Blueprints Figure One: Frameworks, an album that garnered attention with a feature on NPR’s Morning Edition. The project was also under consideration for a Grammy nomination. His New York City performance debut followed in January 2020 with an album release concert.

That same year, he released the follow-up album, Blueprints Figure Two: New Designs, in September 2020. The record earned critical praise and international radio features, particularly in France and Germany. At home in Chicago, Markus was honored as a representative artist during the 2020 Year of Chicago Music—a distinction that recognized his contribution to the city’s vibrant music scene.

In December 2021, Markus showcased the energy of his live performances with a quintet on a dynamic live album release.

His most recent projects were the EP “Penumbra” and “Storybook” a concept album serving as a musical postcard—an intimate, personal reflection on our shared human journey during these times. The album underscores Markus’s belief in music as a form of storytelling and connection.

Collaborating with musicians from Chicago and around the world, Markus continues to explore new ideas with curiosity and openness. His music reflects a deep respect for tradition while embracing the new and unexpected.
