Artist Biography

Tony Adamo is a performance poet, jazz vocalist, and “hipspokenword” artist known for blending jazz history, beat-style poetry, and deep funk grooves. Jazz music reviewers describe his work as a “jazz history lesson” in each stanza, often delivered as rhythmic monologues over intense jazz and soul-jazz instrumentation. Adamo created the unique genre he calls HipSpokenWord, which is built on the influence of musical and literary “wizards” like Jack Kerouac, Gil Scott-Heron, and Mark Murphy.

Improvisational Nature: His performances are often free-flowing; he might write words down, but they frequently transform during live sessions in the studio or on stage.
Vocal Delivery: He uses a “sing-speak” technique that is part bebop beatnik and part radio presenter, characterized by a “breathy jazz rap” style.
Lyrical Themes: His poetry frequently pays tribute to jazz greats like Art Blakey, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk, while celebrating urban life and the “hipster” culture of Jack Kerouac and the San Francisco beat poets.
Tony Adamo has recorded with a vast roster of legendary jazz and funk musicians. His primary collaborator and frequent producer is Mike Clark, the iconic drummer from Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters.
