Sofiane Pamart expands the world of “MOVIE”
French composer and pianist Sofiane Pamart has built a career by challenging conventions, both musically and visually. A Gold Medal graduate of the Conservatoire, he has become one of the world’s most streamed pianists, with more than one billion streams, 32 Gold, 11 Platinum and two Diamond certifications. His performances have taken him from Paris’ Accor Arena to the Paris Olympic Games, where his performance on a burning piano became one of the ceremony’s defining images.
With the release of his latest album, MOVIE, Pamart continues an artistic approach that extends far beyond music. Alongside the album, he has published an accompanying piano score book that functions as both a performance edition and a collectible design object, forming part of a wider visual world created with designer and illustrator Adrien Beaujeant and creative director Guillaume Héritier.
Rather than publishing straightforward piano reductions, Pamart reimagined every work from the album for solo piano. Each composition is presented in two versions: his own solo arrangement, translating orchestral textures and vocal lines to the keyboard, and a lead sheet containing melody and harmony, allowing pianists to create their own interpretations. “You know my love for sheet music. Every album in my repertoire has had its own object,” says Pamart. “A single colour, carried all the way to the edge. Musical notes transcribed with care, one bar after another. But this book came with an additional challenge. MOVIE was conceived for orchestra, voices and choir. All that matter had to be brought back to ten fingers.”
Pamart approached the score book as a work of arrangement and translation rather than reduction. “I brought together two approaches. The first is classical: my personal versions, the ones that come naturally to me when I translate my compositions into solo piano. The second comes from jazz and contemporary music. These are the lead sheets. They hold the essence of each piece – the melody, the chords. Nothing more. This way of reading leaves space. It is made for those who want to invent their own arrangements. Two paths for each piece. One is my proposition. The other is ready to welcome yours.”
Illustrated throughout by Beaujeant, the publication sits somewhere between a music edition, an artist’s book and a collectible design object. It extends the MOVIE universe beyond the record while opening up the music to pianists of different levels and musical backgrounds.
As with every release in the collaboration, nothing is included purely for decoration. “We spend a huge amount of time thinking about details, but nothing is there just for decoration,” says Beaujeant. “Every element has a purpose.” For Pamart, the score book represents the final chapter of MOVIE – and the beginning of someone else’s interpretation. “MOVIE was composed by me, scene after scene, until the very last note. Today, it changes hands. Now it is your turn to become the director of MOVIE.”
About MOVIE:
MOVIE is Sofiane Pamart’s latest album, conceived for piano, orchestra, choir and guest artists. Inspired by the language of cinema, the record unfolds like a sequence of imagined scenes in which the piano becomes the narrator of memories, images and emotions. The accompanying piano score book reimagines the album for solo piano while carrying its visual identity into print through Beaujeant’s artwork, typography and illustrations.
Following performances around the world, Pamart’s next landmark concert will take place at the Stade de France on the 17th of April 2027, where he will perform before an audience of 80,000 in the largest headline show of his career to date.
